Army to return to barracks after new govt takes oath: Army Chief
The army will return to barracks immediately after the newly elected government takes oath, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman has announced. However, he clarified that a portion of the army will remain deployed in a supportive role until police fully take control of the law and order situation.
He made these remarks while addressing army personnel of all ranks during the 'CAS Durbar' organised at 11 am on Sunday, February 15. Members serving in UN peacekeeping missions also joined the event virtually alongside personnel stationed in the country.
The Army Chief praised the professionalism, discipline and sense of responsibility displayed by army personnel during election duties. He said, "The efficiency with which the army has performed its duties during a difficult and sensitive time has further strengthened the people's trust in the institution."
Regarding the army's role in maintaining law and order during the election period, he said, "The army has played a vital role in stabilising the country's volatile political environment. The nation and its people will remember this service of the army."
The Army Chief stated that the army has been performing its duties with full respect for the constitution and civilian administration. After the new government assumes office, the army will return to barracks in the normal course. However, necessary support will continue until police fully take control of the law and order situation.
