Arrest warrant issued against 34 people including former Rajshahi Mayor Litton
International Crimes Tribunal-2 has issued arrest warrants against 34 individuals, including former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Litton, in a case involving crimes against humanity committed in Rajshahi during the July mass uprising.
The tribunal issued the order on Tuesday after accepting the formal charges submitted by the prosecution.
Earlier on 30 July, the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal submitted formal charges against a total of 38 people in this case. Since four of them were already under arrest, the tribunal issued arrest warrants against the remaining 34 individuals.
Among those named in the warrants are Khairuzzaman Litton, former Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Biplob Bijoy Talukder, and former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalia Police Station Humayun Kabir. All of them are currently absconding.
On the other hand, four accused—including former Member of Parliament for Rajshahi-3 Asaduzzaman Asad and Rajshahi City Awami League General Secretary Dablu Sarkar—are currently under arrest. The court has directed authorities to produce them before Tribunal-2 on 23 August.
Tribunal prosecutor Farooq Ahammad stated that two protesters, Raihan Ali and Anjum Sakib, were killed in Rajshahi during the July mass uprising. Many others were severely injured in the incident. The case was filed citing these events as crimes against humanity.
