Arrest warrants issued against 13 in Savar's Yamin murder case

The International Crimes Tribunal has taken cognisance of the formal charges filed against 19 individuals, including former MP for Dhaka-16 constituency Saiful Islam, in the case of the murder of student Ashabul Yamin during the July 2024 uprising in Savar.

The tribunal, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, took cognisance of the charges on Sunday (July 26). Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim appeared for the prosecution, seeking the tribunal's acceptance of the primary charges. He also requested warrants against the absconding accused and orders for those in custody to be produced.

After the hearing, the tribunal accepted the charges and issued arrest warrants against 13 fugitive accused. It also ordered the accused who are in custody in other cases to be produced on August 25.

The other accused are: former additional police superintendent (Crime and Operations) of Dhaka district Md Abdullahil Kafi, former DIG of Dhaka Range Syed Nurul Islam, former police superintendent Asaduzzaman Ripon, former additional police superintendent (Savar Circle) Md Shahidul Islam, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Police Station Shahzaman, former OC of Ashulia Police Station A F M Sayeed, ASI Mohammad Ali, Nayek Suhel Mia, Constable Mahfuz Mia, former chairman of Savar Upazila Parishad Manjurul Alam Rajib, Md Atiqur Rahman, Fakhrul Alam Samor, Mehedi Hasan Tushar, Raju Ahmmed, Md Farid, Zaman Khan, Mizanur Rahman and Sharif Ashraful Alam Babu. Among them, six are in custody in other cases, while the rest remain absconding.

Ashabul Yamin, a fourth-year student of the Computer Science and Engineering department at MIST, was killed during the July 2024 uprising.
