The human rights organization, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the police use of force and beatings on journalists and Dhaka University students during an anti-drug drive at the capital's Suhrawardy Udyan.

In a statement, the organization said that videos circulated in the media and social media showed the journalists being physically assaulted in the presence of the police. At the same time, there have been allegations that the student concerned was beaten with sticks and punched in the presence of a senior official even after he identified himself as a university student, which is said to be extremely unprofessional behavior and contrary to the code of conduct of law enforcement agencies.

ASK said that excessive or unreasonable use of force in the name of an anti-drug drive is unacceptable. Preventing journalists from performing their professional duties and violent behavior with students is a clear violation of civil rights and the right to personal security.

The organization has demanded an impartial, transparent and speedy investigation into the incident and strict legal action against those responsible. It has also called on the relevant authorities to ensure effective supervision of police members to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

The statement said that it is possible to strengthen civic trust only by demonstrating respect for the rule of law and human rights.
