Human rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) has expressed deep concern over the firing targeting journalists in Khulna. The organisation strongly condemned the attack and demanded the swift identification, arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 15, ASK said according to media reports, on the night of July 14, several journalists were gathered near the United Nations Children's Park in Khulna city after completing their professional duties. At that time, armed assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on them, injuring one journalist with bullet splinters.

ASK said such attacks on journalists are not only an assault on personal security but also an attack on freedom of expression, media freedom and the public's right to information. Any attempt to obstruct journalists from performing their professional duties through intimidation or violence is contrary to democratic values and human rights.

The organisation further noted that ensuring a safe environment for journalists to work freely is part of the state's constitutional and international human rights obligations. Article 39 of Bangladesh's Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and press freedom. Additionally, Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) calls for effective measures to protect freedom of expression.

ASK demanded a fair and impartial investigation to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. It also called on the authorities to take effective measures to ensure the safety of journalists and prevent recurrence of such incidents.
