Attack on Nur: 48-hour ultimatum to arrest perpetrators
The Gono Odhikar Parishad has alleged that even after 17 days of the attack on Nurul Haque Nur, the government has not taken any action against the perpetrators. The party’s spokesperson Faruk Hasan warned that if visible steps are not taken within the next 48 hours, a tough programme will be announced.
He issued the ultimatum at a press conference held at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday morning (September 14).
Faruk Hasan said, “We are making it very clear- if the government does not take visible action against the perpetrators within the next 48 hours, we will be compelled to take to the streets with a tough programme. Everyone will understand the nature of that programme in due time, and the government will realise it as well.”
He further alleged that the inquiry commission formed by the government into the incident was given a 30 working-day mandate, which he termed as a delaying tactic. “Despite clear evidence being available in broad daylight, the government is wasting time in the name of investigation. Media footage shows Nur being attacked and left bloodied in the presence of army and police officers, yet no action has been taken to date,” he said.
At the press conference, it was informed that although Nur was scheduled to be released from hospital on Sunday, new complications prevented it. Faruk Hasan explained, “Last night Nur’s condition suddenly deteriorated. Tests revealed a fractured nasal bone, displacement in the jaw, and partial paralysis on the right side. He is still unable to consume solid food and remains on a liquid diet. Injuries to his liver have also been detected, prompting doctors to keep him in hospital for a few more days.”
Regarding the assurance given by the Chief Adviser Dr Mohammad Yunus about Nur’s treatment abroad, Faruk Hasan said that the promise has not been implemented. “Initially Singapore was mentioned, but later other countries’ names surfaced. This proves the government’s lack of sincerity,” he stated.
He added, “We believe such procrastination by the government is deceptive. Therefore, without relying on the government’s promises, we will make arrangements for Nur’s treatment abroad through our party and his family. We will not depend on the government’s pity or charity.”
