Attempted murder case filed against MP Gazi Nazrul and four others, one arrested

An attempted murder case has been filed against Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and four others with Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka. Police have arrested one of the accused, Aminur Rahman, in connection with the case.

The case was filed on Tuesday (21 July) by Obaidur Rahman, the MP's personal driver. The complaint alleges that the accused assaulted him and attempted to strangle him following his objection to an alleged inappropriate relationship involving the MP and over suspicions surrounding the leak of private videos.

The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Rakibul Huda of the Detective Branch's Pallabi Zonal Team, produced Aminur Rahman before a Dhaka court on Wednesday (July 22) and sought an order to send him to prison. After a hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin ordered that he be remanded to jail and directed investigators to submit their report by August 24.

The development was confirmed by SI Saiful Islam of the prosecution division. The other accused in the case are Masum Billah, 41, Motassim Billah, 25, and Rakibul Hasan, 30.

According to the first information report (FIR), Obaidur Rahman had been living at his sister's residence in Rose Garden Tower in the Kalshi area of Pallabi while working as MP Gazi Nazrul Islam's personal driver.

The complaint alleges that, through family connections, the MP frequently visited the residence, where he allegedly developed an inappropriate relationship with Obaidur Rahman's niece. After learning of the matter, Obaidur informed his family and requested that the MP end the relationship. The complaint further alleges that Gazi Nazrul later threatened to kill him.

The FIR also claims that a group later obtained private videos involving Gazi Nazrul Islam and the woman and attempted to blackmail him. According to the complaint, the MP suspected that Obaidur Rahman had secretly recorded the videos and passed them to media outlets and the alleged blackmailers.

Based on that suspicion, the complaint alleges that the other accused attacked Obaidur Rahman on July 14 on the MP's instructions. During the assault, he was allegedly beaten and strangled in an attempt to kill him. The attackers reportedly fled after family members intervened. Obaidur was later treated at Kurmitola General Hospital and claims he has continued to receive death threats.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party, stating that an internal organisational investigation had found allegations of moral misconduct against him to be proven. The party also said it would notify the Election Commission of its decision.
