Attempted rally by banned Awami League in Pallabi, 17 arrested
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 17 leaders and activists of the proscribed Awami League, Chhatra League and Jubo League over allegations of attempting to hold a rally in the Mirpur-12 area under Pallabi Police Station in the capital. A banner, a microbus and two mobile phones were seized during the operation.
The arrests were made early on Friday (July 31) around 6:30am from the paved road adjacent to pillar No. 140 of the Mirpur-12 metro rail line.
Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Hasan Basir said it was alleged that leaders and activists of the proscribed organisations — Bangladesh Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League and their various affiliates — were holding a rally with the intention of conspiring against the government and spreading propaganda.
Sensing the presence of patrolling police, they attempted to flee, but 17 were detained. Several others managed to escape.
He further said a banner was seized from the scene. Additionally, a rented white Hiace microbus and two smartphones used by two of the arrestees were also confiscated.
Legal action against the arrestees is underway. They will be produced before the court after the completion of necessary legal procedures.
