Attempts continuing to spread extremism in society: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that deliberate attempts are being made to divert people’s thoughts and spread extremism in the country.
He made the remarks while addressing a discussion titled “How Secure is Social Security?” at the National Press Club on Saturday (August 23), organized by Arpon Aalok Foundation.
“Such issues are arising when we strive for a progressive society, a fair system to ensure human rights, and the reduction of inequality,” Fakhrul said.
Criticizing the current political structure, the BNP leader said, “Members of parliament have taken over the duties of upazila chairmen, which is not their role. Instead of focusing on lawmaking, they are engaged in road construction, building development, and even deciding on car purchases. The state system itself has been taken over.”
He further alleged that the Awami League government has caused irreparable damage to the country over the past 15 years. “Institutions have been destroyed. It is impossible to think this damage can be repaired in just a year and a half,” he said.
Among others present at the discussion were Sohrab Hasan, joint editor of Prothom Alo; economist M Masrur Riaz; Ganosamhati Andolon chief coordinator Zonayed Saki; National Democratic Movement chairman Bobby Hajjaj; and former lawmaker Rehana Akhtar Ranu.
