Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has announced that he will resign from his post on December 27 to contest the 13th National Parliamentary Election. Speaking to journalists on Wednesday afternoon, he said he would step down from the country’s top legal position before entering the race.

“I will contest the 13th National Parliamentary Election. I have already sought nomination. I am still serving as attorney general, but I will resign from the post to take part in the election. I will step down on December 27,” he said at a press conference at his office on Wednesday, December 24.

Earlier, on December 21, he announced that he would contest the election from Jhenaidah-1 Shailkupa constituency with BNP nomination. On December 23, BNP leaders from Shailkupa upazila collected the nomination papers on his behalf.

Following the fall of the Awami League government after the July mass uprising in 2024, Md Asaduzzaman, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, was appointed attorney general on August 8 that year. He later resigned from the post of BNP human rights affairs secretary. He had earlier contested the 2018 parliamentary election from the same constituency as a BNP candidate.
