Badruddin Umar laid to rest at Jurain cemetery in capital
Prominent writer, educationist, intellectual, and politician Badruddin Umar has been laid to rest at Jurain Graveyard on Monday afternoon (September 8), following his funeral prayers.
Jatiya Mukti Council Secretary General Faizul Hakim confirmed that Umar was buried around 4.00pm on the grave of his aunt.
Earlier, his funeral prayers were held at the Central Jame Masjid of Dhaka University, with people from all walks of life—including writers, politicians, journalists, educationists, and researchers—paying their respects.
Badruddin Umar, 94, had been ill for a month and was admitted to Bangladesh Specialized Hospital, where he passed away at 10:05am on Sunday.
Throughout his distinguished life, Badruddin Umar made significant contributions to education, politics, and literature.
He began his career as a part-time teacher at Dhaka University and later established the Department of Sociology and helped initiate the Department of Political Science at Rajshahi University.
He received several awards, including the Independence Award, Bangladesh’s highest civilian honor, though he chose not to accept any.
