Bail hearing for Bidisha Ershad set for today

The bail application of Bidisha Ershad, former wife of late president Hussain Muhammad Ershad, is set to be heard on Wednesday (September 2) in a case in which she was sentenced to two years in prison for fraud over the sale of a flat.

The hearing is scheduled for around 11am before Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahjahan Kabir.

Bidisha’s lawyer, Moniruzzaman Sabuj, said the defence would seek bail on condition of filing an appeal against the conviction and expressed confidence that she would be granted bail.

On May 20, a Dhaka court sentenced Bidisha to two years in prison and fined her Tk 10,000 in the fraud case. As she was absconding, the court later issued an arrest warrant against her.

She was arrested from a restaurant in Gulshan on August 25.

The case was filed in 2008 over an alleged fraud involving the sale of a flat at President Park in Baridhara.

According to the complaint, a deal was reached to sell the apartment for Tk 80 lakh, but the buyer allegedly received neither the flat nor a refund after making the payment.
