Bangladesh calls for stronger global action to eradicate racism
Bangladesh has called for strengthening global efforts to eradicate racism, establish equality and uphold human dignity.
Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman made the call at a commemorative meeting organized at the United Nations General Assembly on the occasion of the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Racism’ in New York local time on Monday (March 23).
Speaking at the meeting, he highlighted Bangladesh’s participation in various international conventions against racism and racial discrimination and reiterated the country’s commitment in this regard. He also mentioned the ongoing racist persecution in Rakhine and Gaza and said that the international community has not yet achieved the desired progress in achieving the goals of the Durban Declaration and Plan of Action.
The Foreign Minister also expressed concern about the deprivation, exploitation and limited access to justice of migrant workers worldwide. He said that these situations are contradictory to the core ideals of the United Nations.
Highlighting Bangladesh's constitutional commitments, he said the country is committed to protecting human rights, equality and dignity. In addition, the government is working to build an inclusive society, peaceful coexistence and strengthen the capacity of human rights institutions.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman also emphasized investing in education, preventing online hate speech and increasing intercultural dialogue to build a world free from racism.
