Bangladesh facing ‘dangerous conspiracy,’ says Rizvi
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has warned that Bangladesh is currently facing a “dangerous conspiracy” orchestrated by both domestic and international forces. Speaking on Wednesday, Rizvi expressed hope that a free and fair election would be held before Ramadan, allowing citizens to exercise their voting rights after a gap of 16 years.
Rizvi made the remarks while paying tribute to National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at his grave on the Dhaka University campus, marking the 49th death anniversary of the revered poet.
“The people of Bangladesh remain deprived of many fundamental rights,” Rizvi said, according to UNB reports. “The ultimate goal of our movement—democracy—has yet to be fully realized. However, we believe that a free and fair election will take place soon, before Ramadan, enabling the voters who have been unable to cast their ballots for 16 years to finally do so.”
He emphasized the need for strengthening other pillars of democracy, including ensuring public security, upholding the rule of law, and guaranteeing justice. “The courts must become the final refuge for the helpless, and we must work towards building such a society,” he added.
Referring to Kazi Nazrul Islam’s legacy, Rizvi highlighted the poet’s role as a symbol of humanity, love, and rebellion. “Nazrul’s songs and poems have inspired generations—from the anti-British movement and the Liberation War to the mass uprisings of the 1990s and recent nationwide protests. His works have galvanized people to stand up and raise their voices,” Rizvi said.
He further noted that the fearless spirit of resistance during difficult times was fueled by Nazrul’s verses. “Whenever the people of this country have been denied their rights, it is Nazrul’s poetry that unites them and strengthens their resolve to overcome oppression,” Rizvi added.
The BNP leader also praised Nazrul’s boldness in confronting colonial powers through his writing, asserting that his spirit continues to inspire contemporary political struggles. “Our leader Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman have carried forward this legacy, culminating in the July movement,” Rizvi concluded.
