Bangladesh jail to be renamed "Correction Services Bangladesh’: IG Prisons

The Department of Prisons has announced plans to rename Bangladesh Jail to ‘Correction Services Bangladesh’, signaling a renewed focus on prison reform and rehabilitation.

Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain, Inspector General of Prisons, revealed the decision at a press conference held at the central prison office on Tuesday. The move aims to highlight the shift from mere incarceration to correction-centered services.

To support this transition, the department has finalized the draft of the ‘Correction Services Act-2025’, which has been submitted for government approval to update existing prison laws.

Addressing overcrowding issues, the authorities have opened two new central prisons and four district prisons. Furthermore, for enhanced administrative efficiency, the Dhaka division has been split into two separate divisions.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to modernize the country’s correctional system.
