Bangladesh and Japan have signed a bilateral agreement on the transfer of defence equipment and technology. The agreement was signed in Dhaka on Tuesday, February 3, by Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan, principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division, on behalf of the Bangladesh government. Japan’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Saida Shinichi, signed on behalf of his country.

In a press release, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the agreement came into effect on the day it was signed.

The agreement establishes a clear legal framework for the transfer of defence equipment and technology between the two governments. Under the framework, such equipment and technology may be used in jointly designated projects, particularly those contributing to international peace and security.

The agreement outlines approval and verification procedures for each transfer and includes fundamental principles to ensure the proper and designated use of transferred defence equipment and technology.

It also specifies necessary control measures to prevent transfer to third parties or use beyond the agreed purposes.

According to Japan’s foreign ministry, the agreement will further strengthen cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan in the defence equipment and technology sector. It is also expected to help sustain Japan’s defence industry production capacity and technological development, thereby contributing to the country’s overall security.
