Bangladesh not intimidated by border fences: Foreign Affairs Adviser
People of Bangladesh are not afraid of barbed wire, nor is the government, Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir has said. He stated that whenever Bangladesh needs to speak, it will speak.
The adviser was responding to a question from journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, May 11.
His comments came after newly elected West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, at his first cabinet meeting, decided to construct barbed wire fencing along the border with Bangladesh. He announced that land would be handed over to the Indian Border Security Force within 45 days for the construction of this fence.
The issue of constructing barbed wire fencing along the still-unfenced sections of the border had remained pending during the previous West Bengal government. Dhaka is monitoring the matter, Kabir said.
The adviser also said the Indian government has committed that Sheikh Hasina will not be able to carry out any terrorist activities in Bangladesh from India.
Regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's upcoming visit to China, Kabir said there is no problem with the prime minister going to China, just as US President Donald Trump has gone.
He also said that significant progress has been made in talks with China regarding the Teesta River project, and China's Exim Bank has expressed interest in financing the project.
