Bangladesh, Russia agree to expedite Rooppur power generation

Bangladesh and Russia have agreed to expedite the remaining construction work at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and begin power generation and supply electricity to the national grid as soon as possible.

The issue was discussed at a meeting between Bangladesh’s Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam and Alexey Likhachev, director general of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, on Monday (September 14) on the sidelines of the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the meeting reviewed the latest progress of the Rooppur project. Both sides also reiterated their commitment to accelerating construction in line with the project’s targets and moving toward power generation as soon as possible.

The science and technology minister stressed the importance of completing the remaining work swiftly while adhering to international nuclear safety standards and ensuring the highest level of safety. He also underscored the need to connect electricity generated by the plant to the national grid at the earliest opportunity.

In response, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev assured that Russia would continue providing the necessary technical and strategic support for the implementation of the Rooppur project. The two sides also emphasized the need to strengthen coordination between the countries to accelerate the project.

At the end of the meeting, the science and technology minister and the Rosatom director general exchanged commemorative gifts as a symbol of the friendly relations between Bangladesh and Russia. Representatives from both countries were present at the meeting.
