Bangladesh to act if 'push-in' occurs from West Bengal border: Foreign Minister

Bangladesh has made its position clear regarding the potential 'push-in' situation following the political change in India's West Bengal. Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has said that if any push-in occurs through the West Bengal border, Bangladesh will take countermeasures.

The foreign minister was briefing journalists at the state guest house Padma after a meeting with a visiting US delegation on Tuesday morning, May 5.

The foreign minister said Dhaka is keeping a close watch on the situation arising from the political change in the neighbouring country, and the highest alert has been maintained to secure the border.

In the same briefing, Dr Khalilur Rahman provided important information regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's upcoming foreign visits. He said the prime minister has special diplomatic commitments to friendly countries like China and India. If everything goes as planned, the prime minister may visit either China or India in June. The detailed plan for the visit is currently being finalised by coordinating mutually convenient times and schedules.

One of the main topics on the agenda for the prime minister's potential visit to China will be the 'Teesta Master Plan'. The foreign minister said the prime minister is firmly committed to implementing the Teesta Master Plan. China's cooperation and technical aspects in implementing this project are expected to be discussed in detail during the visit.

Regarding the trade agreement with the United States, the foreign minister said these agreements have been made ensuring the country's larger interests and economic development.
