Bangladesh and the United States have formally signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation in the energy sector, marking a significant step forward in bilateral ties between the two countries.

The agreement was signed on Thursday morning (May 14, local time) at the US Department of Energy in Washington, DC.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman signed the deal on behalf of Bangladesh, while US Energy Secretary Chris Wright represented the United States.

The agreement comes at a time when global energy security concerns have intensified due to ongoing instability and tensions in the Middle East.

Officials believe the partnership will help Bangladesh diversify its energy sources and strengthen long-term energy security.

Under the bilateral agreement, the two countries will expand cooperation in oil, gas, geothermal energy and biofuel sectors.

The MoU also includes provisions for technology transfer, research collaboration and knowledge sharing to enhance technical capacity in the energy industry.

Officials said the agreement could also create opportunities for Bangladesh to access LNG, LPG and other energy products from the US market at more competitive prices.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman described the agreement as a major milestone in the growing relationship between Dhaka and Washington.

He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and US President Donald Trump for their support in advancing the initiative.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright termed the agreement a historic advancement in the friendly relations between the two nations.

Senior officials from the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington and the US Department of Energy were also present at the signing ceremony.
