Bangladesh votes witness smooth, festive polling: Russian CEC
Russia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has described the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections and referendum in Bangladesh as peaceful and festive, according to a press release issued by the Russian Embassy in Dhaka on Sunday (February 15).
A delegation of international observers, led by CEC commissioner Pavel Andreev, visited Bangladesh on February 11–12. The team inspected over 40 polling stations across eight locations in Dhaka and Narayanganj, observing the entire process from voting to counting.
The Russian observers noted widespread voter enthusiasm and participation, highlighting that many citizens, some accompanied by family members, viewed the election as a long-awaited exercise following the government change during the July 2024 student-led uprising.
The delegation emphasised that political competition remained confined to the ballot box, reflecting a healthy democratic practice.
Observers also praised the preparedness of election officials, stating that presiding officers conducted their duties efficiently in accordance with national laws and Election Commission directives. The presence of polling agents and coordinated management ensured transparency, and the overall environment was described as “friendly and constructive.”
Security arrangements were commended, with over nine lakh police and military personnel deployed, enabling voters to cast their ballots safely. While minor incidents were reported, they did not affect the overall electoral outcome.
During their visit, Pavel Andreev met with Bangladesh Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, discussing electoral standards and modern technology.
Andreev extended an invitation on behalf of Russian CEC Chairperson Ella Pamfilova for Bangladeshi representatives to participate in international observation of the upcoming Russian State Duma elections.
