Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has said that the 1,000-bed Bangladesh–China Maitree General Hospital in Nilphamari will provide advanced healthcare services to people in the northern region.

He made the announcement on Sunday (January 25) at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), where the project was approved.

The hospital, built with Chinese assistance, is also expected to ease the burden on major hospitals in Rangpur and Dhaka.

Yunus described the hospital as a strategic investment in the country’s healthcare infrastructure, rather than just a physical facility.

According to the Chief Adviser’s office, the project includes the construction of a ten-storey hospital building, dormitories and residential facilities for doctors, nurses, and staff, supporting infrastructure, and modern medical equipment.

The hospital will offer specialized services in nephrology, cardiology, oncology, and neurology, along with modern emergency care, ICU, CCU, HDU, advanced diagnostics, and state-of-the-art operating theaters for complex treatments.

The project, costing Tk 2,059 crore, will be implemented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare from January this year to December 2029. Bangladesh will contribute Tk 179 crore, with the remaining funding provided by China as a grant.

The hospital plans to employ 893 doctors, 1,197 nurses, and 1,410 other staff. Yunus added that upon completion, the hospital will also serve patients from neighboring countries like Nepal and Bhutan, positioning Bangladesh as a key regional healthcare hub.
