Bangladeshi-origin US citizen jailed for suspicious loitering in Dhaka
Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi-origin US citizen, has been arrested and sent to jail for suspicious activities in Dhaka’s Minto Road area, police said.
He was detained under the Special Powers Act and will face a preliminary interrogation hearing on Monday.
Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam said Enayet, 55, who holds a US passport, was arrested on Saturday (September 13) for behaving suspiciously.
Police added that they have applied for a seven-day remand to investigate his alleged involvement in a conspiracy and to identify other suspects.
According to police records, Enayet Karim arrived in Bangladesh from New York on September 6 via Qatar Airways. After staying initially at Hotel Sonargaon, he moved to Gulshan. During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly claimed to be a contractual agent of a US intelligence agency tasked with working on the formation of a new or caretaker government amid the interim government’s fragile situation.
Authorities said that during a stop, Karim could not give satisfactory answers, and two iPhones were seized containing information allegedly linked to a conspiracy against the government.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi ordered his detention and scheduled the remand hearing for Monday.
Officials emphasized that the case is being handled to protect government sovereignty, public safety, and maintain law and order.
