Imprisoned lawyer and former MP Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon has expressed his desire to participate in the upcoming Bangladesh Bar Council elections. A writ has been filed in the High Court seeking necessary directions in this regard.

Supreme Court lawyer Liton Ahmed filed the writ as the petitioner on Wednesday (April 15).

Earlier, an application was made on behalf of Barrister Sumon to the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner to arrange for his signature on the nomination form on April 12.

The writ states that a request has been made to issue a rule on why the administration's inaction in resolving the application should not be declared as being beyond legal authority.

In addition, a request has been made to the Deputy Commissioner to ensure the opportunity to sign Sumon's nomination paper, which is under trial.

In addition, a request has been made to order the Bangladesh Bar Council to accept his nomination paper. The writ has made the Law Secretary, the Bar Council Secretary and the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner respondents.

Lawyer Liton Ahmed said that the Bar Council elections will be held on May 19 and the last date for submitting candidatures is April 16. Sumon's signature is required on the nomination form to become a candidate.

It is worth noting that Barrister Sumon was arrested on October 22, 2024. He is a former member of parliament from Habiganj-4 constituency. He was elected as an independent candidate in the 12th National Parliament election. Several cases are pending against him.
