BCB election cleared for Oct 6 as HC suspension extended
The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division has extended the suspension of a High Court order that had halted activities surrounding a letter from Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam Bulbul. The letter, which sought councillor nominations from district and divisional ad-hoc committees, had faced legal challenges ahead of the upcoming BCB election.
With the suspension now extended, legal representatives confirmed there is no barrier to holding the BCB election scheduled for October 6.
Justice Farah Mahbub issued the order on Sunday following a hearing in the Chamber Court. Appearing for the state were Additional Attorney General Arshadur Rauf and Barrister Anik R Haque. Barrister Mahin M Rahman represented the BCB, while Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol appeared for the petitioner.
Earlier, on September 22, the High Court had suspended the activities related to the BCB President’s letter and issued a rule asking why the letter should not be declared invalid. The bench of Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Miah and Justice Bishwajit Debnath presided over the hearing.
The letter in question, dated September 1 and 2, 2025, was sent via registered mail and courier to the presidents and conveners of various district and divisional sports associations. It included nomination forms for councillors and a copy of the BCB constitution (amended in 2024), in preparation for forming a General Council and conducting the 2025 Board of Directors election.
On September 11, the Cabinet Division also issued instructions to divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners to strictly follow Article 9.1 (a) and (b) of the BCB constitution when nominating councillors, reinforcing the legitimacy of the process.
The legal developments mark a significant step forward for the BCB as it prepares for its upcoming election, now free from judicial obstacles.
