Benazir Ahmed’s arrest a historic success of police: Home Minister tells parliament
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has told parliament that the reported arrest of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed in Dubai marks a “historic success” for the Bangladesh Police in combating corruption and ensuring accountability.
Speaking in a 300-rule statement in the Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday (June 14), the minister said Benazir Ahmed was arrested on June 12 in the United Arab Emirates and efforts are underway to bring him back to Bangladesh at the earliest.
He described the development as a milestone in establishing the rule of law, saying it sends a clear message that no one is above the law, regardless of power or position.
“The arrest is a historic success for Bangladesh Police. Through this, we are moving beyond a culture of impunity,” the minister said, adding that the government remains committed to ensuring justice against all offenders.
The home minister said an Interpol Red Notice had been issued against Benazir Ahmed, following which Interpol requested UAE authorities to detain him.
He added that Bangladesh was formally informed of the arrest through an email from the UAE Ministry of Interior’s National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abu Dhabi on June 12.
According to him, under international procedures, a formal extradition request must be submitted through diplomatic channels within 30 days of arrest. The Ministry of Home Affairs is preparing the necessary documents, which will be sent through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to UAE authorities. The National Central Bureau (NCB) at Police Headquarters will also coordinate with Abu Dhabi authorities.
The minister expressed hope that Benazir Ahmed would be repatriated soon.
Benazir Ahmed served as Inspector General of Police from April 2020 to September 2022. Prior to that, he held key positions including Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
In 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on several current and former RAB officials over alleged human rights violations, including Benazir Ahmed.
In 2024, allegations of illegal wealth accumulation and corruption were raised against him, prompting an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). During the probe, he reportedly left the country. Multiple cases were later filed against him, and courts issued arrest warrants.
