Benazir may have passport of another country: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has expressed suspicion that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who was granted conditional bail in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), may possess a passport of another country. He said steps have been taken to present this information before the court to seek cancellation of Benazir's bail.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Monday, the Home Minister said the government has information that Benazir Ahmed may have a passport of another country. Preparations are underway to present the matter before the court.

He said the UAE court granted Benazir Ahmed bail with conditions restricting his departure from the country. The government came to know of this on Sunday afternoon. The government's retained law firm was immediately instructed to take necessary measures.

The minister said the concerned secretary of the Bangladesh government has already spoken to the ambassador in the UAE. Steps have been taken to obtain certified copies of the court's bail order to ascertain its conditions.

He said the government's retained lawyers have also been instructed to present the necessary documents before the court in the process of bringing Benazir Ahmed back to the country. Based on this evidence, an application will be filed to cancel his bail.

When asked how he secured bail despite the government's efforts to bring him back, the Home Minister said it would not be appropriate to comment until the full court order is received. However, the bail conditions will be reviewed and necessary legal measures will be taken.
