Benazir will be brought back to face trial after 'bail release': State Minister

The government is making vigorous efforts to bring back former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, accused of corruption and abuse of power, to face trial through legal process, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed.

Speaking to journalists at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Sunday (August 2), she said necessary communication and exchange of documents are ongoing between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates government to bring Benazir Ahmed back.

The State Minister said, "Our communication with the UAE government regarding Benazir Ahmed is ongoing. The UAE authorities had sought specific information and documents from us. The required information and documents have already been sent to them from the Home and Foreign Ministries."

Regarding the repatriation process, she said, "The UAE is following its own legal procedures. At the same time, Bangladesh's Home Ministry is maintaining constant communication and coordination with the concerned authorities. Information exchange and legal proceedings are currently ongoing."

Expressing optimism about bringing Benazir Ahmed back, Shama Obaed said, "After completing all legal and diplomatic processes, we hope to bring accused Benazir Ahmed back to the country very soon. He will be brought back and the trial process will be completed in accordance with the law."

She further informed that necessary decisions will be taken in consultation with the Home Ministry and other concerned departments regarding further steps to make the repatriation process more effective.
