Bikers oppose advance income tax, memorandum to NBR
Bikers have submitted a memorandum to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) against the plan to impose advance income tax on motorcycles in the upcoming 2026-27 budget. After protesting with placards in front of the revenue building in Agargaon, a five-member delegation went inside and submitted a memorandum on Sunday morning (May 17).
Delegation member AKM Emon said that NBR officials took the bikers' concerns seriously during the discussion and said that the figures reported in the media are not final. However, he said that they will remain steadfast in their position of not paying any advance income tax.
According to the NBR plan, there is a discussion about collecting advance income tax of Tk 2,000 for motorcycles up to 110 cc and Tk 5,000 for motorcycles from 111 to 125 cc, Tk 10,000 for motorcycles from 126 to 165 cc and Tk 10,000 for motorcycles above 165 cc. However, in a meeting with NBR officials on Thursday, the Prime Minister described the tax rate as 'very high' and directed them to reduce it to Tk 1,000, Tk 3,000 and Tk 5,000 respectively, an official said.
It is worth noting that currently, no advance income tax is payable on battery-powered auto-rickshaws and motorcycles. The NBR has announced that it will impose tax on this sector from the next fiscal year.
