The BNP and its like-minded parties have announced a three-day nationwide blockade programme from Tuesday.
The announcement came on Sunday evening soon after the dawn-to-duck general strike ends.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that the blockade will be held on all modes of communications till Thursday to press home their one-point demand of immediate resignation of the government.
"The blockades will be held in protest of the recent detention of the party's General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir, the assaults during the citywide rallies on Saturday, and the tragic killings of several party activists," he added.
The nationwide hartal enforced by the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami ended today amid reports of arson attacks in Dhaka.
Reports of torching three buses were filed as far--Baitul Mukarram south gate, Mohammadpur and Tantibazar--since the hartal began at 6:00am.
In a major development, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was detained by the Detective Brach (DB) of Police on Sunday morning.
He was detained from his house in Dhaka's Gulshan area at around 9:30am, Shamsuddin Didar, a member of the BNP chairperson's press wing said.
DB Additional Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan Division) Hafiz Al Asad said that they have brought in Mirza Fakhrul Islam for questioning.
Meanwhile, police have cordoned off BNP Standing Committee Members Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Mirza Abbas's residences.
BNP announced to observe the dawn to dusk hartal across Bangladesh after they were forced to call off their Saturday’s grand rally after a violent clash with police.
A police constable was killed during the clash while BNP claimed that one of their activists died in police firing.
According to police, BNP, and other sources, over 1,000 people, including over 100 policemen, over 30 journalists, and hundreds of BNP leaders and activists, were injured during the clashes at Kakrail, Bijaynagar, Nightingale crossing and Fakirapool.
Partners of BNP’s simultaneous movement also extended support to BNP’s hartal, while Jamaat-e-Islmai called dawn to dusk hartal across the country separately on Sunday.
