BNP holds parliamentary meeting, set to finalise speaker, deputy speaker post
The ruling party BNP is set to hold a parliamentary meeting today to finalise decisions on the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions.
The meeting will be chaired by Parliament Leader and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the ruling party’s parliamentary office, will also discuss who will preside over the opening of the new parliament, according to BNP sources.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed that the meeting will settle both the Speaker election and the presiding arrangements for the session.
The first session of the 13th National Parliament will commence tomorrow.
Typically, the ruling party’s nominees secure the top parliamentary posts due to its majority. This time, BNP has proposed offering the Deputy Speaker position to the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami, though it is unclear if they will accept.
The opposition is expected to finalise its stance in a separate meeting today.
Among the candidates for Speaker, the ruling party is reportedly considering Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Moyeen Khan, and former Education Minister Osman Faruk, with Hafiz Uddin Ahmed emerging as the frontrunner in discussions.
The 13th parliamentary elections were held on February 12, 2026, resulting in a two-thirds majority for BNP.
As per the Constitution, Parliament must convene within 30 days of election results. President Mohammed Sahabuddin has summoned the first session for 11:00am tomorrow at the National Parliament House. The duration of the session will be determined in a meeting of the parliamentary advisory committee.
