BNP lawyers protest over DAG, AAG appointments at Supreme Court

A faction of BNP-backed lawyers staged a protest at the Supreme Court premises, alleging irregularities and financial transactions in the recent appointments of Deputy Attorneys General (DAGs) and Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs). They demanded the cancellation of the controversial appointments and the appointment of qualified lawyers who were active in movements and struggles.

The protest was held under the banner of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum in front of the Attorney General's office on Sunday (August 2).

Addressing the rally, former Deputy Attorney General Masud Rana alleged that individuals long associated with Awami League politics had been appointed as DAGs and AAGs through financial transactions.

Lawyer Akhter Hossain said those accused of involvement with the fascist regime had also found a place in the new appointments, and demanded that lawyers who had been active in movements and struggles for a long time be appointed instead.

Former Deputy Attorney General Ayub Ali Ashrafi said it is customary to appoint lawyers aligned with the ideology of the ruling party to the Attorney General's office. However, he alleged that controversial individuals had also been included in this round of appointments. He also questioned the current Attorney General's involvement in movements and struggles.

Lawyer ABM Ibrahim Khalil demanded an impartial investigation into the appointment process, alleging transactions of Tk 4 crore.

Other speakers at the rally included lawyers Sharif U Ahmed, Md Isa, Anisur Rahman Khan, Zahirul Islam Sumon and Anwara Shikha, along with other leaders of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum.

The protesters said the controversial appointments need to be reviewed and an impartial investigation conducted to ensure transparency in the process.
