BNP leader Pintu released from prison after 17 years
After serving nearly 17 years in prison, BNP Vice Chairman Abdus Salam Pintu was released from Kashimpur prison in Gazipur.
The grenade attack targeting an Awami League rally at Bangabadhu Avenue took place on August 21 in January 2008. Since then, he has been in prison after being arrested in the grenade attack case.
Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur central prison Al Mamun confirmed the release of BNP leader Pintu on Tuesday (December 24).
He said Pintu was released from prison at 11:04am on Tuesday. All the documents for his release had reached the prison before that. Later, after verifying the papers, he was released as there was no arrest warrant in any other case.
Mentionable, Abdus Salam Pintu was elected as a member of parliament from Tangail-2 (Gopalpur-Bhuiyanpur) constituency in the 1991, 1996 and 2001 national elections. In 2001, he was appointed as the deputy minister of education. In January 2008, he was arrested in the August 21 grenade attack case. He was the sentenced to death in that case.
