BNP lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Misty has resigned from her position as a member of Parliament from a reserved seat for women. She submitted her resignation letter to the Speaker at Parliament on Thursday (October 1) afternoon. The development was confirmed by multiple reports on Thursday.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had instructed Misty to step down from her reserved parliamentary seat. According to party sources, she was also directed to resign from the BNP.

Misty had been in the spotlight following an attack, vandalism and alleged looting at the RADDA MCH-FP health centre in Mirpur. On the night of September 24, parts of the health facility were demolished using heavy machinery. Allegations were subsequently raised that BNP leaders and activists from different levels were involved in the incident.

The government and the BNP have said the incident is being investigated. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had also said that allegations regarding Misty’s involvement in the attack on the RADDA health centre were being investigated. He said action would be taken if anyone was found to have been involved.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka North City BNP committee was dissolved on Wednesday night following the RADDA incident. Misty had previously served as a joint convener of the committee. At the same time, organisational action was taken against several leaders from different levels of the BNP and its affiliated organisations.

However, Misty has denied any involvement in the attack, vandalism or alleged looting at the RADDA health centre. In interviews with the media, she rejected allegations linking her to the incident.

With the submission of her resignation letter on Thursday afternoon, Misty’s tenure as a reserved-seat lawmaker came to an end. Her resignation from the BNP is also expected to take effect in line with the party’s decision.
