BNP promised to accept referendum verdict in consensus commission: Badiul Alam Majumdar
CEO of SHUJAN (Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik), Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, said that BNP representatives in the consensus commission formed during the interim government had said to accept the referendum verdict. He made this information at a press conference organized at Dr. Kamal Hossain's chamber in Motijheel, the capital, on Tuesday (March 17).
This press conference was organized in the context of the recent publication of the full verdict of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division, upholding the caretaker government system in the constitution.
Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar said that according to the verdict of the Thirteenth Amendment, there is a provision for the most recently retired Chief Justice to become the Chief Advisor. However, the final structure of the caretaker government system will depend on two things—the verdict in the case related to the Fifteenth Amendment and the 48 issues approved in the July Charter referendum.
Regarding the fact that the Constitutional Reform Council has not yet been formed, he said, “It is a matter of time. We hope that politicians will learn from the mistakes of the past and act responsibly. It is better not to create unnecessary debates on issues that have been finalized by the people’s verdict.”
He also said that the final decision on the caretaker government system will come through parliament, probably through the Constitutional Reform Council. “The verdict given by the people in the referendum should be considered final,” he noted.
Stating that the people have supported the 48 issues presented in the referendum, he called on all parties concerned to amend the constitution in accordance with that verdict.
Responding to a question about the future of the referendum results, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar said, “The BNP representatives in the Consensus Commission promised to accept the verdict of the referendum. We hope that the government and the opposition will uphold the verdict of the people through mutual discussions.”
