The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a show-cause notice to Advocate Fazlur Rahman, an advisor to the party chairperson, for making a series of controversial and misleading remarks regarding the July-August mass uprising.

The notice, sent from the party's central office on Sunday, accuses Rahman of repeatedly making statements that contradict the BNP’s ideological stance and the spirit of the historic movement. He has been asked to submit a written explanation within 24 hours, addressing why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.

According to party sources, the notice states that Rahman's comments have caused widespread public backlash and are seen by many as part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish the BNP’s reputation. “Your statements about the martyred individuals of the July-August uprising are completely against the party’s principles,” the notice reads. “Such remarks dishonor the sacrifices made by more than 1,500 people—including over 400 BNP leaders, activists, students, and civilians—who were killed, and over 30,000 who were seriously injured during the movement to restore democracy.”

The party further alleges that Rahman’s comments have offended religious sentiments and disrupted internal discipline. He has been directed to respond in writing to the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan within the stipulated timeframe.

The controversy stems from remarks made by Rahman during a recent event, where he reportedly claimed that all participants in the July-August movement were affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Shibir—a claim that has sparked strong criticism both within and outside the party.

The BNP has not yet disclosed what specific disciplinary measures may follow if Rahman fails to provide a satisfactory explanation.
