BNP set to form government, heading towards absolute majority
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured government formation by winning over 150 seats in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. According to unofficial results and information received from various centres, the party has achieved absolute majority. As of the latest count, the BNP and its alliance have won 167 seats. Results from 71 constituencies are still pending. The BNP, led by Tarique Rahman, is firmly on course to form the new government of Bangladesh.
BNP leaders said this victory has come through the massive participation and support of the people. At a press conference arranged at the party's central office, leaders stated, "This is the people's clear verdict in favour of restoring democracy." They pledged that the new government will strengthen democratic institutions, establish the rule of law, and work to restore economic stability.
Although the formal announcement from the Election Commission is awaited, various observers believe the party may not just win over 150 seats but could also secure a two-thirds majority in the next parliament .
On the other hand, the 11-party alliance of Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP has unofficially been elected in 62 seats as of the latest count. While the alliance performed well in Rangpur, Khulna and Rajshahi divisions, it could not gain significant ground in other divisions .
Meanwhile, a festive atmosphere has been witnessed among BNP leaders and activists in various parts of the country since midnight on Thursday. Supporters are expressing joy through victory processions and rallies. However, BNP leaders have urged everyone to exercise restraint and celebrate the victory peacefully while maintaining a harmonious environment.
