BNP standing committee to meet on Saturday

With political discussions over the new presidential election at a peak, the BNP has called a meeting of its highest policy-making forum, the standing committee, for Saturday. Multiple senior leaders of the party have said the meeting may discuss matters related to the presidential election.

BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan confirmed the meeting but did not provide specific details about the agenda. He said no formal directives have been issued yet on the matter. However, a member of the party's standing committee said the presidential issue will come up for serious discussion at Saturday's meeting.

President Md Sahabuddin resigned on Friday, citing a lack of "physical and mental capacity" to continue in office. Since then, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has been performing the duties of the acting president . In this context, preparations for the election of a new president have begun.

According to the constitution, the Election Commission coordinates with the Speaker of Parliament before announcing the schedule for the presidential election . In continuation of this, Chief Election Commissioner A. M. M. Nasir Uddin met with the Speaker on Tuesday.

Several names are circulating in BNP's internal discussions as possible presidential candidates. Among them are Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP standing committee members Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Abdul Moeen Khan, and Vice Chairman Altaf Hossain Chowdhury. Retired Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, former interim government chief Muhammad Yunus, a secretary, and several university teachers are also being discussed .
