The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to hold a meeting of its highest policymaking body, the National Standing Committee, on Saturday (August 1), with the upcoming presidential election expected to top the agenda.

According to party sources, the evening meeting is likely to focus on the party's strategy for the presidential race, including whether BNP will nominate its own candidate or extend support to a consensus nominee.

Senior BNP leaders said they expect the presidential election to be held within August, prompting the party to begin formal discussions on its position. The meeting is also expected to deliberate on potential candidates should the party decide to field one.

However, party insiders indicated that the final decision will likely rest with Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, following recommendations from the Standing Committee.

Speaking to reporters in Bogura on July 26, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party would determine whether to support a party-backed or non-partisan presidential candidate in accordance with the Constitution and existing laws, with the decision to be taken at the Standing Committee meeting.

While BNP leaders have remained publicly tight-lipped about potential nominees, several names have emerged in internal discussions.

Among them, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is widely viewed as the frontrunner, with party insiders citing his long tenure as secretary general, leadership during major political crises, clean political image and broader public acceptability.

The names of Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan have also been circulating within political circles as possible contenders.

Despite the speculation, BNP leaders insist that no formal decision has yet been taken, and the party's official position is expected to become clearer after Saturday's meeting.
