BNP to observe nationwide mourning on Monday over Jamiruddin Sircar's death
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will observe a nationwide mourning programme on Monday (July 13) following the death of its Standing Committee member and former Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.
The announcement was made on Sunday (July 12) by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi during a press briefing at the party's central office in Naya Paltan.
As part of the programme, black flags will be flown at BNP offices across the country, including in Dhaka, while party leaders and activists will wear black badges in remembrance of the veteran politician.
Jamiruddin Sircar, a five-time lawmaker and former Speaker of Parliament, passed away early Sunday at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka's Shyamoli while undergoing treatment. He was 94.
His first funeral prayer will be held after Zuhr prayers at Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, followed by a second Namaz-e-Janaza at 5:00pm at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. He will later be laid to rest within the Parliament complex with state honours.
Paying tribute to the late leader, Rizvi described Jamiruddin Sircar as "a living chapter of Bangladesh's political history," saying his contributions to the Language Movement, the Liberation War, and the country's pro-democracy struggles would be remembered with deep respect.
