BNP-NCP clash over ghat lease in Narayanganj, 5 injured
At least five people have been injured in a clash between activists of BNP and the National Citizen Party (NCP) over the submission of a schedule for leasing a ghat in Fatulla, Narayanganj.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 21, in front of the Narayanganj Sadar Upazila Parishad office in the Sastapur area of Fatulla.
According to witnesses, Tuesday was the last day for submitting schedules for the temporary lease of the Rajapur Gudar Ghat in Fatulla. BNP's Baktaboli Union president Nazrul Islam and NCP's district convener Jubayer Ahmed Sardar had arrived to submit their schedules. In the presence of police, pushing and shoving began between the activists of the two groups, which escalated into a chase and counter-chase, leaving at least five people injured.
Jubayer Ahmed Sardar of NCP alleged that Nazrul Islam and his supporters obstructed their activists from submitting the schedule, and they resisted.
Nazrul Islam claimed they did not obstruct anyone, and that the other side deliberately instigated the fight.
Fatulla Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam said tensions had arisen between the two groups over the schedule submission but have since been diffused.
Sadar Upazila Executive Officer S M Faiz Uddin said a tender for Tk 31,70,750 has been announced for the temporary lease of the Rajapur Gudar Ghat. Four individuals have submitted schedules. The evaluation committee will announce the highest bidder within three working days. He said he cannot comment on disputes occurring outside the office.
