BPSA urges to reconsider decision to change police uniforms
Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) has urged to reconsider the decision to change the uniforms of the police force.
According to the organization, more research and public opinion polls are needed before changing the long-standing traditional uniforms.
This concern was expressed in a statement signed by the organization's general secretary and Cumilla Superintendent of Police Md. Anisuzzaman on Monday (February 23) night.
The statement said that in 2003-04, after scrutiny and selection based on the recommendations of a committee formed by the then government, the khaki uniform was changed and the current uniform was introduced. At that time, the skin color of the members, the country's weather, easy identification on day and night duty and lack of similarity with other forces were taken into consideration.
The organization claimed that these practical aspects were not properly considered while determining the new uniforms. It was also mentioned that it may be difficult to quickly identify police members at the field level due to their similarity with the uniforms of some other organizations.
The statement further said that in the 13th National Parliament Election held on February 12, 2026, police members performed their duties in traditional attire. It is claimed that their professionalism in free and peaceful elections has been appreciated at home and abroad.
Terming the change of uniforms as a costly process, the organization said that in the current economic context, it would be more reasonable to allocate funds for modernization of the force, provision of vehicles at the police station level, increasing logistical support, and improving training rather than making new uniforms.
The government has been called upon to reconsider the decision, taking into account the emotions and reality of the force members. At the same time, it is requested to take realistic decisions based on research and public opinion.
