BSEC Commissioner vows 'no leniency' for capital market saboteurs
Md. Ali Akbar, Commissioner of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), has warned of strict legal action against those involved in activities that undermine the capital market and cause losses to investors. He assured that law-abiding participants have nothing to fear regarding penalties.
Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day workshop on the capital market held at BRAC CDM, Ashulia, on Friday (July 4), Ali Akbar stressed the need for stringent enforcement to maintain market discipline and integrity.
The workshop was organized by BSEC for members of the Capital Market Journalists Forum (CMJF), an association of journalists covering the capital market.
BSEC Chairman Khandakar Rashed Maksud conveyed his greetings through a video message. Also present were Commissioner Farzana Lalarukh, Executive Director Mir Mosharraf Hossain, CMJF President Golam Samdani Bhuiyan, and General Secretary Abu Ali. The event was moderated by Assistant Director Shahidul Islam.
“I believe truth and beauty cannot coexist with falsehood. Strict law enforcement is essential to ensure market order. While fine collection may take time, those willing to pay face no issues. Appeals are their right, but fines must ultimately be paid,” said Ali Akbar.
On the recent downturn in the market, he clarified that the BSEC is not responsible. “Building trust in the market is complex. While it is difficult to predict when trust forms, I assure you the Commission has not caused any harm to the market.”
He described the current period as suitable for investment, urging investors to capitalize on available opportunities.
“The BSEC’s objectives are to protect the market from damage and to promote its development,” he added.
Commissioner Farzana Lalarukh highlighted ongoing initiatives by BSEC, including journalist training programs, which will continue in the future.
Executive Director Mir Mosharraf Hossain praised journalists for their investigative reporting, which greatly assists the Commission. He expressed confidence that the workshop would enhance their skills further.
CMJF President Golam Samdani Bhuiyan thanked the BSEC, calling the training timely and vital for enhancing journalistic capacity in market development.
