The Cabinet has given in-principle approval to a proposal to bring Narayanganj’s Rupganj and Gazipur’s Kaliganj under the jurisdiction of Dhaka district, in a major administrative restructuring move aimed at improving urban governance.

The decision was taken at the fifth Cabinet meeting held on Thursday night (April 23) at the Jatiya Sangsad complex, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

According to a press briefing, the meeting also approved proposals to bring the Purbachal New Town project area under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka North City Corporation, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority.

Officials said the decisions aim to resolve administrative and service delivery challenges in the Purbachal area, which currently spans multiple districts, creating gaps in policing, municipal services, and utility management.

Under the proposed changes, residents of Purbachal are expected to gain easier access to civic services such as birth and death registration, trade licence issuance and renewal, waste management, road and drainage maintenance, street lighting, and mosquito control.

The inclusion under DMP is intended to strengthen law enforcement and ensure improved public safety, while integration with DWASA is expected to enhance water supply and sanitation services.

The Cabinet also noted that bringing parts of Rupganj and Kaliganj under Dhaka district would support better coordination in urban planning, land management, and public service delivery for the expanding capital region.

In addition to these proposals, the Cabinet meeting also discussed amendments related to national tea day, securities laws, insurance regulations, and the removal of tax-free vehicle import privileges for Members of Parliament.
