Calling Ghulam Azam national hero is insult to freedom fighters: Mirza Abbas
BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas said describing Ghulam Azam as a national hero amounts to an insult to the country’s freedom fighters.
He made the remarks on Tuesday morning, December 16, after paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial on Victory Day.
Mirza Abbas said if Ghulam Azam and his associates are labelled as the nation’s greatest sons, then freedom fighters are being humiliated, raising the question of where the freedom fighters stand.
He said Ghulam Azam’s party has never wished for peace or independence in the country, from 1947 through 1971 to the present day, and still does not want an independent Bangladesh. He alleged that the party wants the country to remain unstable and in turmoil.
Responding to a question about attempts to pit 1971 against 2024, Mirza Abbas said both years stand in their own contexts and there is no possibility of comparing 1971 with 2024.
He said there had been hopes of rebuilding the country with renewed aspirations after independence, but alleged that the Awami League shattered those hopes.
He added that in the days ahead, particularly during elections, he hopes people will vote for a party that truly reflects their aspirations and expectations.
