Chankharpool mass killing: Trial begins for 8 accused including ex-DMP commissioner

The trial of eight individuals, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, has officially begun in connection with the shooting deaths of six people in Chankharpool, Dhaka, during the July-August uprising in August 2020.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 ordered the framing of charges against the accused on Monday (July 14).

Additionally, the court set August 10 and 11 as dates to hear testimonies and present the opening statements in the case.

During the proceedings, four of the accused including former Inspector Arshad, Constables Md Sujon, Imaz Hossain Emon, and Nasirul Islam, were present in court. All of whom are currently in custody.

On May 25, 2025, the ICT has formally accepted charges of the case, accusing the accused of using deadly weapons against unarmed, peaceful protesters during the uprising on August 5, 2020. Shahid Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Junayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Howlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Mia were killed in this shootings.

Other accused individuals include former Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Additional Deputy Commissioners Shah Alam and Md Akhtarul Islam, and former Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Imrul.
