Charge sheet filed against 8, Including Zafar Iqbal and Maksud Kamal, at ICT
The prosecution has filed a formal charge sheet with the Registrar’s Office of International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) against eight people, including former Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor A.S.M. Maksud Kamal and writer Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising of 2024.
The other six accused are DU professor A.K.M. Jamal Uddin, retired Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Bangladesh Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain, General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, DU Chhatra League President Mazharul Kabir Shayan and General Secretary Tanvir Hasan Saikat.
Among the accused, Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, A.K.M. Jamal Uddin and Tanvir Hasan Saikat are currently in custody. The other five have been reported to be absconding.
After the charge sheet was filed on Wednesday, prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim told journalists that the accused had been charged with instigation, conspiracy, attempts and incitement in connection with attacks on protesting students at the Dhaka University campus.
He said, “Maksud Kamal made provocative statements and was involved in a conspiracy. As a result, Chhatra League, Jubo League and police attacked the protesters.”
“We have filed a formal charge sheet in this regard,” the prosecutor said.
