Cheap eggs’ sale yet to start despite announcement
Even after the announcement of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP), the sale of eggs at cheap prices has not started in the kitchen .
A number of 13 substations in the capital's two city corporations were scheduled to start operations from Sunday (November 10) by Breeders Association of Bangladesh (BAB) and DNCRP.
BAB leaders said that the programme of selling eggs at low prices could not be started separately due to the decrease in the price of eggs in the market.
Mentionable 20 lakh eggs per day were supposed to be supplied to consumers directly from producers through agents or dealers at 13 centres including Tejgaon Bazar, Mirpur-1, Mirpur-10, Mohammadpur Krishi Market, Uttara-10 (Khamarpara Road), Jurain, Konapara, Sarulia, Shanir Akhara, Chattogram Road, Kaptan Bazar, New Market, and Khilgaon.
During a spot visit at Tejgaon Bazar in the capital on Monday (November 11), no activity of selling cheap eggs. However, due to the reduced demand for eggs, the government is selling eggs in the wholesale markets at a slightly lower price.
Asked about this, Atiya Sultana, Deputy Director (Operations Sub-Division) of the DNCRP, said, “Breeders have not informed us about the performance of the first day of egg sale so far. You can talk to the breeders about this.”
BAB President Mahbubur Rahman told Views Bangladesh, “Nowadays, because the price of eggs has decreased, the operation of selling eggs could not be started that way.”
“However, we are selling eggs at affordable prices through wholesalers and retailers. Eggs are being produced at the farm level at a lower price than the price set by the government. Each egg from the farm was supposed to be sold at Tk 10.58, but now it is selling for Tk 10.20,” he added.
Former President of the Egg Traders Association Md Amanat Ullah said, "We have been selling eggs at the price set by the government in Tejgaon market since October 18. Now we are selling eggs wholesale at a price lower than the government-fixed price.”
