Chhatra Dal protests against Jamaat Ameer's 'X' post
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal staged a protest march on Sunday (February 1) against Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman over an 'controversial' post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account targeting working women.
The march began at 12:00 pm from Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen, with participants demanding an immediate retraction and apology, describing the post as misogynistic and disrespectful.
Student leaders said such statements send a negative message about women’s rights and vowed to continue social and political protests against them.
The controversy erupted after the post from Dr. Rahman’s official X account drew widespread discussion and criticism on social media. Various political, social, and student organisations condemned the post as offensive and objectionable.
In response, the Chhatra Dal organised the protest march and rally at Dhaka University.
Jamaat-e-Islami later stated that Dr. Rahman’s X account, along with the social media accounts of several top party leaders, was temporarily compromised in a coordinated cyberattack.
According to the party, the attackers gained control of the account for a short period, during which the unwanted and misleading post was published.
The party also clarified that the post did not reflect the Ameer’s views, statements, or positions.
Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, Dr. Rahman’s assistant secretary-general and head of the central publicity and media department, said the party’s cyber team quickly restored control of the account.
He condemned the spread of false and misleading content, urging media and social media users to verify information before sharing.
