Chhatra Dal storms DU senate meeting, calls VC ‘Jamaat administration’
Dhaka University campus saw heightened tension on Tuesday as leaders of the Nationalist Chhatra Dal unexpectedly entered a meeting at the Senate building related to the upcoming Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) election.
Around 5:30 pm, during discussions on the election, activists from Chhatra Dal confronted Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niyaz Ahmed Khan, accusing the current administration of being a ‘Jamaat administration.’ They chanted slogans inside the meeting room, creating a chaotic atmosphere.
Chhatra Dal accused Jamaat-Shibir-affiliated outsiders of gathering near the campus to influence the election, a claim denied by the Vice-Chancellor, who said measures have been taken. However, the activists remained unconvinced.
Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos, president of the university’s Chhatra Dal unit, slammed the table and called the VC’s administration ‘Jamaat-backed.’ The Vice-Chancellor denied any political affiliation.
Rakibul Islam Rakib, central president of Chhatra Dal, warned that if no action is taken, they would withdraw all cooperation from the administration.
After voting concluded, Abidul Islam Khan, Chhatra Dal’s vice-presidential candidate, held a press conference alleging vote rigging. He said polling agents were blocked from entering centers, ballot number distribution faced obstructions, and a candidate was threatened with student status cancellation. Khan also claimed a propaganda campaign against him misled media, though corrections were later made.
Khan stated a formal complaint has been submitted regarding these irregularities.
